elissa harrington is at the vigil, where friends and family say the man police described is not the person they knew. elissa. >> reporter: hi, ann. that candlelight vigil has been going on for an hour. you can see a large group of people outside salon amour in downtown walnut creek, where anthony banta, jr., worked for the past two years. those who knew him say he is not the man who police describe attacking his roommate early thursday morning. here's some video from thursday. the 911 call came in just after 3 a.m. dispatchers could hear screaming in the background. officers arrived to the diablo point apartments and say they were forced to shoot banta, who they say was armed. tonight, dozens gathered and shared memories of the man they called gentle and kind. they're puzzled why he acted the way he did thursday morning. we also got a chance to speak with his grandfather, who tearfully described a grandson who was very loved. he told me he does not know of any mental illness in the family but is convinced that something must have happened before that attack. he also wants answers fr

killed yesterday at sandy hook elementary school. 20 children ages 6 and 7 died along with 6 adults. all were shot multiple times at close range with an assault rifle, not handguns as reported yesterday. investigators also say the shooter forced his way into the school although they have not given specifics as to how. and about two hours ago, president obama announced he will attend a memorial service tomorrow in newtown. tonight the mourning is well under way. in the past two hours this vigil was held for victoria soto, the first grade teacher shot while trying to shield her first grade students from the gunman. her family says she lost her life doing what she loved. she was 27 years old. a live report from sandy hook in a moment but first, cbs 5 reporter don knapp is at a vigil in san francisco's dolores park. don. >> reporter: ann, even though we are a continent away from what happened in newtown, connecticut, people in san francisco in the bay area very much touched and troubled by what happened here. there was a vigil tonight one of about 16 or 17 around the bay area suggested

weather was still on issue. cbs 5 reporter elissa harrington is live at sfo where some people may miss christmas with the family. hey eilssa. >> reporter: hi brian, as you can imagine many frustrated travelers trying the get home in time for the holidays, in fact i spoke with one man whose flight was canceled and he said the next available flight is not until christmas day. he's just one of many passengers experiencing another day of cancellations and delays. delays are averaging just under an hour with the longest wait times about three and a half hours. yesterday, more than 100 flights here were also canceled. i spoke with one man who might be spending his first christmas away from his parents and an airport manager who explains how a bad turn of the weather can cut the number of flights in half. >> i was supposed to go through colorado and they canceled my flight out there. so i was going to miss my connecting flight. and now i just -- i've been here for like four hours trying to figure out another way to get back to ohio to see my family. >> once the weather comes in and it reduces

to mill valley, over to richland, down to oakland, we're looking at heavy rainfall and light to moderate rain as well. and san jose and cupertino getting rain. and widespread rainfall totallies of 1 to 2 inches. that's why we have a flash flood watch for the north bay, the coast and the mountains and a flood warning for the napa river and the russian river and it's going to be windy as well. wind advisory for the coast and mountains for wind gusts up to 50 miles per hour. this happens round number 3. we'll talk about what happens once this moves out. that's coming up in the full forecast in a few minutes. >>> two rivers to the north are being watched closely tonight. the napa and russian rivers are both under a flood warning. they're expected to rise above flood stage tomorrow on the napa and then early monday in guerneville. this is how the russian river looked this afternoon. fast moving and clearly over its banks right now but expected to crest at about 4 feet above flood stage in the next 36 hours causing major flooding on roads and bridges. don knapp is along the river in n

20 people at the food mat on monument boulevard complained of a chemical smell and told emergency responders they quote felt weird. initially the fire department could not find the source of the smell. so county hazmat teams are now investigating to try to figure out what if anything is wrong. no customers were taken to the hospital. >>> updating a developing story in sacramento where a standoff between police and an armed man inside a jack in the box is over. around 1:00 police say the man took two women hostage after he tried to rob the restaurant. after four hours police shot the suspect. both hostages made it out safely. >> it's very unfortunate it hand to end this way. and -- had to end this way. and the safety of those inside the restaurant as well as those of the community surrounding the enrant was just pair -- restaurant was just pair mount. >> his condition is not known. >>> we are barely halfway through the weekend and oakland police are already investigating their third suicide in just hours. the latest happened near jack london square around 2:45 this afternoon. the p
